Here’s an article about how Jerry Buell, a highly qualified Florida public school teacher, has been suspended and removed from the classroom for noting (on Facebook) that homosexuality is sinful and that seeing two grooms kissing is gross. Let me state right now that homosexuality IS a sin and that two men kissing is always gross. In any event, a couple interesting things flow from this situation with Mr. Buell.
The first thing, which is obvious as the bark on a dog, is that if Buell publicly gloried in sodomite unions, he would still be teaching. Even if he said that two dudes kissing is a turn on to him, he’d still probably be fine; I suspect he’d even be promoted. Maybe the NEA would have offered him a job. Levity aside, Buell’s situation clearly shows how massively biased our society (or at least some very loud and persuasive parts of our society) has become against the opposition to homosexuality. A fellow can hardly even say that it’s wrong or gross without suffering repercussions. The thing is that the free speech clause of the First Amendment is designed to protect exactly this kind of speech. No one, after all, needs protection when they’re saying something that’s inoffensive or something with which everyone agrees.
