Some guy (I was tempted to say “worthless piece of human trash”) open fired in a local mall today, Clackamas Town Center. I don’t have a lot to say about that guy, mostly because I don’t have enough invective to pour upon such a piece of crap without a whole lot of cussin’. Essentially, I lack the vocabulary to say what I think of that homicidal (and evidently suicidal) coward.
What I’d like to think about (even if very briefly) is that the murderer WAS shot before he started unleashing death upon the people in the food court. The problem was he was shot with an iPhone (or something like it) and not a gun. As I understand it, there is footage of this blood-thirsty loser walking through the mall, dressed in black, wearing a mask, and toting an assault rifle. “What do you think he’s up to?!” Instead of getting a couple of guys to tackle him and subdue him, this person simply recorded him. This was all prior to him shooting!
Now, I’m no rough-and-tumble scrapper. I’m not (and never have been) the type of guy to look for a fight. But, listen… what kind of MEN do we have in this society that will simply watch a guy like this walk into a mall? I don’t want to come off as too judgmental of the video guy. I totally get that such a situation is terrifying. I’d be terrified, too. Honestly, I don’t know if I’d be man enough to tackle the guy or to pull my Glock, point it as his head, and pull the trigger until he was dead on the floor… but I’d hope so.
Along those lines, where are the armed citizens? Where are the law-abiding men (and women) with guns under their clothes? Are we really content to rely up the first responders (God bless them)? Why are citizen first responders so sparse? On a positive note, however, at least some of the store workers shielded shoppers by pulling them into stores and locking the doors. That’s something.
My prayers are with the families of the two people who were murdered. I pray that Christ would be honored, that his church would step up to serve, and that many people would trust in Christ, even in the midst of this murderous tragedy.
